Course book Information for Faculty

We Want to Serve You
The Bookstore's primary goal is service–to provide you a wide range of quality book services, as well as other academic and general retail services. Our most important academic service is to provide course books and course materials for sale to students each term. Read below to find out about faculty course book and material ordering and about general communication with the textbook department.

Faculty Course Book and Materials Ordering / Communications
Academic Departments often designate department staff as a liaison to the Bookstore to coordinate department faculty's course book and materials orders, completing the textbook order forms and relaying messages between the Bookstore and faculty.

HOW TO ORDER
We now offer several options for ordering all of your desired textbooks. Please review these options to determine which is the best and most convenient one for you.

  • The Faculty Center Network
The Brown Bookstore has now also teamed up with the brand-new internet solution company Faculty Center. This new connection will allow faculty to browse hundeds of textbooks online, read valuable reviews and information, and request their desired textbooks. Simply click on the link below and make sure to register with Faculty Center once you get there, giving you access to this valuable system.

  • Faculty Orders
Both textbooks and course pack materials are ordered by completing and submiting the standard Textbook Adoption Order Form available through the academic department secretary or the Bookstore, and mailed to Textbook Department, Box 1878, or faxed to 863-2233. E-mail the order information to: Textbooks@brown.edu.

  • Desk Copy Requests
A template for desk copies, is also available for desk copy requests, or forms can be obtained from the Textbook department. Desk copy requests must be sent directly to the publisher. If preferred, template orders may be printed and mailed, or faxed, to their destination. Questions, please call 863-2270.

Request Deadlines

Faculty Course Book and Course Pack Material Orders are due:

  • April 15 for Semester I
  • November 1 for Semester II

Early faculty course order information enables the Bookstore to provide the best possible price to students at buyback and to effectively manage its inventory. It also provides sufficient lead time for the staff to acquire new and used textbooks and course pack permissions.

In recognition of the special effort faculty take to meet the Bookstore"s early ordering due dates, faculty who submit course orders by the due date receive a Bookstore Courtesy Card for 20% off general trade books and most Campus Shop merchandise.

Foreign Books

Foreign books present particular problems with order lead times, pricing and return policies. Some foreign books are not regularly stocked, or cannot be obtained through distributors. They must be specially imported. Often the selling price is very high to students and the Bookstore is not permited to return unsold copies. Faculty are asked to be conservative with their order quantity requests and to also plan to re-use these titles so the Bookstore can sell unsold, non-returnable titles, and buy back used books from students, reducing student costs on foreign book titles. The Bookstore appreciates thisconsideration from language study departments and from other faculty requiring foreign books. The textbook staff works closely with faculty to meet the need for foreign books.

Desk Copies

The Textbook Department can provide faculty with forms requesting desk or educator copies from publishers; the Textbook Department is unable to supply faculty with desk copies. The completed request form must be sent from the academic department to the publisher directly. Your department may have a supply of these desk copy request forms.

Faculty Course Pack Ordering Information

The Brown University Bookstores highest priority is to deliver quality service in support of University course requirements. As a University operated bookstore, we appreciate our academic service responsibilities and also, your cooperation and support. Faculty and academic staff assistance with deadlines and the ordering process helps the Bookstore to provide students with reliable and convenient one stop shop course book and course pack services.

Custom Publishing Services

The textbook department, in the Brown University Bookstore, has developed special services to support faculty requirements for customized "course pack" materials.

Faculty can customize instructional and reference materials to fit their course requirements as an alternative, or as a supplement, to the traditional textbook.

The "course pack" is typically a bound composition of excerpts, chapters, articles, out-of-print books or works written by Brown faculty that is shelved with other course books for resale to students.

The Bookstore will obtain the required permissions on copyright materials ordered by faculty for resale to students including previously used materials. The Brown Bookstore complies with International and US copyright laws.

Brown University Graphic Services Copy Center scans, re-masters if needed, and stores materials in its electronic printing system once it is authorized by the Bookstore.

In order to ensure compliance with copyright laws, the University has designated the Bookstore to act as the authorized resource for the resale of copyrighted course materials.

The Bookstore requests that faculty submit their orders for course packs as early as possible. Many permissions can be obtained in up to 6-8 weeks, but many can take considerably longer. We are not legally allowed to reprint items without permission of the copyright holder. Early requests from faculty not only increase the chances for copyright clearance, but also get priority from the Bookstore. Also keep in mind that after clearance is obtained, it takes time to have the copies printed and bound.

April 15 - Semester I
November 1 - Semester II
or no later than eight weeks before the start of classes.

If you would like a copy of your syllabus included in the packet please submit a copy with your originals. The original copies will be returned to you as soon as the desk copies are available.

Faculty have their choice of bindings including:

  • tape/glue binding (fastback)
  • plastic spiral binding (GBC)
  • coil binding (notebook)
  • stapling (in corner, or along center fold aka "saddle-stitch")
  • three-hole punching (for 3-ring binder)
The Bookstore and Copy Center work closely with faculty to properly package materials to meet instructional needs and to contain the costs to students.

The Bookstore reserves the right to print less than assumed enrollment. Reorders are placed promptly and generally arrive within 48 hours.
